Culture of Bhutan

Based on its Tibetan form of Mahayana Buddhism, the culture of Bhutan contains a pinch of Tibet’s ancient Bon shamanist religion. Places to Visit

Tiger's Nest

Also known as Taktsang's Monastery, Tiger's nest is known for the sacred monastery of Guru Rinpoche. An easy half trek takes you to this pilgrimage site and offers with breathtaking views of the Paro valley. It stands on the edge of a cliff above the lush forest of several species of rhododendron and blue pine.

Rinpung Dzong

Popularly known as the Fortress on a Heap of Jewels, Rinpung Dzong was built in the 16th century. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Bhutan, filled with various temples and shrines. This dzong is also a typical example of Bhutanese architecture and is deep rooted in traditions.

Punakha Dzong

It is the second largest dzong in Bhutan, which speaks a lot about Buddhist culture and traditions. Punakha Dzong is known for its splendid structure and cannot be missed out on one’s trip to Bhutan. Some of the major attractions of this place are- intricate paintings, sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the terton Pema Lingpa.

Buddha Dordenma Statue

Placed at the foot of the hills in Thimphu, the Buddha Dordenma Statue is a 169 feet tall statue of Buddha. It is visible from anywhere in Thimphu and is a popular tourist attraction. The presence of this statue signifies the importance of Buddhism in the country.

Phobjikha Valley

Phobjikha is a small town, bestowed with valleys and surrounded by mountains. This valley is in the shape of a bowl and is placed at the border of Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. It is known for its dramatic landscapes and passes.

Haa Valley

Nestled in the Himalayan land in Bhutan, Haa Valley connects Paro, Chhukha and Samste district of Bhutan. This valley does not have too many conveyances, but can be reached from the nearest town of Paro. It was opened to tourists only in the year 2002.

Chele La Pass

Yet another popular tourist spot in Bhutan, Chele La Pass is en-route the Haa Valley in Paro. It is situated at a height of 3989 meters and provides with spectacular views of the Jomolhari mountains. One of the major attractions of this place is the Haa summer festival.
